Healthy moms are not just important, they are a necessity. Mothers in homes are what we call essential services, similar to fire fighters and policemen. Having said that, moms must stay healthy. How does the busy mom who has a ton load of work get this done? She must eat. Yes, it’s hilarious as moms are notorious for skipping meals. But there’s a way to get everything done.
Plan your meals
Moms are strapped for time, but they make time for everyone else. Newsflash, if you’re a necessity then you have to be around. Hence you must eat. So, when planning meals for the kids and family, include yourself. Yes, you deserve to be planned for. Planning what you’re going to eat reduces more than half the time that goes into the actual meal preparation.
Be conscious of food choices
As moms, we know every detail of our kids’ meals. We’re cognizant of what’s healthy for them. The same effort should be given to our meals. Mothers need foods that provide energy and sustenance. This means lean proteins and high fiber diets. Also, only buy healthy snacks. You’re going to snack any way. Make sure you only have those that are good for you. Depending on the mom’s age, there may be other health considerations. Planning meals saves time and helps in making conscious food choices.
Know your allergies and illnesses
Make sure that all necessary health checks are done so that you’re aware of allergies and any possible health conditions. Armed with this knowledge, food selection and prep will cater to your needs as part of the family. This is absolutely necessary to not only prevent unnecessary down time, but also to avoid exacerbation of chronic illnesses like hypertension and diabetes.
Hydrate
It’s said all the time, but it may not be internalized. Water is not optional, it’s essential. Moms need to drink water. A dehydrated mom is a sick mom. If drinking water seems hard to do, treat it like a new habit. Constantly carry a bottle and sip even when not thirsty. You’ll eventually develop the habit of drinking water and staying hydrated.
Mothers put enormous effort into caring for their families. They make sure that they are healthy and happy. When moms acknowledge and accept that they are actual members of that family, care will be taken to keep themselves healthy too. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but we can start with building blocks.
