Parents, children do chores. No, it’s not fantasy land or euphoria. It is possible to get your kids to do chores. There’s no guarantee they will do them happily. Worst case scenario they’ll do them like us, begrudgingly. So how do we get it done? Let’s discuss four ways we can get it done.
The biggest mistake we make as parents is to wait until our kids are older to implement chores. That’s a recipe for disaster. If you can’t get a five-year old to pick up after themselves, there’s no way you’re going to get a fifteen-year old to clean their bathroom. Give your kids age appropriate chores as soon as possible. Start with simple things like clearing the dinner table, stacking the dishwasher or even a pair of socks or underwear to hand wash. You will be thankful later.
Make it routine
Don’t label them chores, make it a part of routine. For example, making up your bed is something that is part of the morning routine. Washing the dishes after a meal is a necessity. When it becomes something that is always done, there is less resistance.
This may be a bit trickier, that’s why I suggest having the conversation when they’re younger. The crux is that laundry isn’t a chore, it’s necessary if you want clean clothes. The bathroom needs to be cleaned if you don’t want to use a smelly toilet. Additionally, they’re not “chores”. As members of the household, everyone is responsible for contributing and doing their fair share. Once again, the time to have this conversation is in kindergarten, not high school.
I am personally against this, but parenting is personal and private. Many households have experienced lots of success from using money as a reward for doing chores. There’s the potential for teens not caring about the money after awhile and then you’re left with trying to find another motivator.
Ultimately, we all have to figure out what works best for our homes. Make no mistake, you will get resistance regardless of your approach/methods. Just remember, you’re the parent. That means you’re in charge 😊
