When I was a little girl, my mom always insisted that we eat together as a family at least once a day. Everyone in my family was really busy with school and work so I just chuckled at the idea because I knew it would be a hard thing to do. Eventually, we successfully sat down each night for dinner together due to her persistence. I have to thank her for insisting this because I was very happy every time we sat down for dinner. During these dinner conversations, we had so many heartfelt and meaningful exchanges. Naturally, not all of them were positive but it was fundamental for all of us to get an understanding of each other. Now, more than ever, I am convinced that every family should spend eating together as often as possible. It does so much good even without you realizing it.
What it will do for your family?
Build Connections and Bonds Faster
Eating together with your family will create a sense of togetherness and belonging. When your children can see that you care, they will feel loved and safe. Having this family tradition can also help set aside a specific time at least once a day in their hectic schedule of school, extracurricular activities and friends. Your children might resist at first, but they will learn to appreciate the quality time and develop stronger bonds.
It’s good for your kids to get different perspectives from someone older in the family or vice versa. When we talk, we exchange and share stories, viewpoints and ideas. Listening to the adults at the dining table can help kids understand other viewpoints that they might not be aware of yet. You are then exposing them to different alternatives and even introducing them to new ways of thinking. You might not realize that there’s more than just one way of looking at things and either your kids can point it out to you or you can point it out to them. Also, keep an open mind if some of your ideas might be too old-fashioned for them.
For kids, knowing that they have their family to support them is a huge confidence boost in their self-esteem. They know that they have you as their sounding board and that they can share their ideas with you. They will gain more confidence each time you listen to them and give them your support in times of need. It might sound trivial and not too believable, but family time can help children become healthier and better adults, ensuring a good future for your own grandkids.
Try eating together as a family at least once a week if this is a new thing for all of you. If you are already doing it a few times a week, great job! If possible, do it every night. You will see how much good it does to your family. Maintaining quality relationships with your family members is so essential that everyone should make the time. Don’t make excuses. We can always schedule time.
