Every kid should own certain things. Being a kid is supposed to be fun. Not a care in the world and tons of things to do. A definite bonus is tons of possessions. Kids are always getting stuff from grandparents, aunts, uncles and other relatives. This makes gift givers think hard about what to buy. What should every kid own? Here are my top five.
Every child should own a globe. Firstly, there are the academic benefits. Homework takes on a different tone when you can physically see the continents being discussed in class. Also, owning a globe will definitely ignite the travel bug. Kids will definitely be interested in visiting Madagascar when they learn that it’s a real country and not just a cartoon.
An analog watch
In our digital age, the word analog seems very ancient. This means that every child can read the time on a digital watch as soon as they learn their numbers. But these same kids are stumped in second and third grade when they’re learning to tell time. Every kid should own an analog watch.
A piggy bank/savings account
Teaching money management to our kids usually falls way down on the list after learning to read and playing an instrument. Having a child learning the importance of saving early in life cannot be understated. Giving a child a piggy bank and/or having them open a savings account that they use regularly is a great habit to develop.
Riding a bicycle is so much fun! But how will kids know this if they don’t own bikes? Owning a bicycle opens a whole new world to kids as they grow. Spring and summer months take on a whole new meaning! Not to mention the health benefits. With the growing cases of childhood obesity, adding cycling to our kids’ activities is not just fun, it’s healthy.
There are health benefits to wearing sunglasses. The World Health Organization reports that wearing sunglasses prevents excessive UV exposure that can cause cataracts and ultimately blindness. Also, newsflash, it’s possible to develop photokeratitis, sunburn of the eye. And besides that, sunglasses are just cool. And what kid doesn’t want to increase their cool factor?
These are my top five things that kids should own. What are yours?
