As I was wading through the mountains of laundry in my daughter’s room, not sure which pile was clean and which was dirty, I thought to myself it might be time to get rid of some clothes. With them being out of school for the summer, maybe a few versatile pieces would make my life easier.
While I have seen the various capsule wardrobes for women, I never consider it for the kiddos. That is until now. I haven’t tackled this project yet but, it is on the list.
Put your list making skills to use.
Make a list of what you want each wardrobe capsule to contain. If an item doesn’t fit on the list, don’t keep it.
This list will of course vary based on your own lifestyle, kids’ ages, school, where you live and what works best for your family.
Here is an example of a Capsule Wardrobe Master List for each child that I found:
2 pairs of jeans
4-6 pairs of shorts
2-3 dresses for the girls
6 pairs of socks
slip on shoes
10 pairs underwear
Pick Your Color Palette
As you know, kids have their favorite colors and will typically only wear those colors. I would be sure to include their favorite colors if you don’t want a royal rumble when getting ready for the day.
Say Goodbye to the Extra
If the clothes don’t fit on the master list, donate them. This will probably be the hardest part. But once these extra clothes are gone, you will a weight lifted and your laundry time will be shorter as well.
Tips for sorting clothes into piles:
- Keep pile – Smallest pile
- Donate pile – This will be the biggest pile, and the criteria for this stack will be up to you.
- Reuse pile – Second smallest pile. If you have don’t want to waste the clothes that you aren’t keeping or donating, reuse them. Cut them into cleaning cloths, paint rags, and other household items.
- Sentimental pile – This can include the baby outfits that mean something to you, clothes you wore as a kid that they wore too and any other small clothing items.
Fill in the Missing Pieces
Now you can go shopping. Look at the master list for each child, make a list of all the items you still needed for each of kiddo. Check out local consignment stores first or turn to online shopping for the remaining items. The list helps you avoid buying extra clothes you don’t need and makes it easy to find the clothes you are missing.
Could someone please send me the motivation to start this project? Mmmkay, thanks.
