Being a California Native, having grown up in Northern California the majority of my life, it is safe to say I am partial to Lake Tahoe. I love the beauty in the winter and fun activities available during the summer. From North Shore to the South Shore there is an activity for every member of the family making this California Destination one of my favorite spots for a quick family getaway.
As the twentieth century unfolded, so did the popularity as a traveler destination, fueled by its grandeur as well as the season’s activities and, more recently, to Nevada gambling by its proximity of this area. The California side of Lake Tahoe is split in the South Shore and the North Shore, and it’s essential to choose for your base of operations between both, while you may spend some time in both places. Driving from one to another takes an hour or more in the summertime and, depending upon the weather, might not be feasible in winter season months.
Each side of the lake embodies different traits and appeals to different travel goers. Laid back and family friendly might describe the North Shore whereas South Lake Tahoe could be explained as having more nightlife and action with the many casinos, shows and clubs. If relaxation and\/or outdoor adventure are what you’re looking for, we can promise that either side of the lake offers both.
If you’re flexible on travel dates, bear in mind it’s easier to find autumn and spring bookings, and the rates are significantly lower then. Sept and October, when the crowds are gone, but the weather is still nice, are one of the most enjoyable and least expensive months to visit. If possible, plan your stay to Sunday until Thursday nights, whenever you can frequently find excellent accommodation values. In case your visit falls on Fridays and Saturday, dinner reservations are advised, particularly on the North Shore. Be advised that although most of the lodgings, restaurants and some parks are open all year round, many of its own visitor centers, attractions and beaches are closed from Nov through May.
During the winter months, the region honors its own designation as North America’s largest concentration of skiing facilities. The North and South Shores feature all year round, spectacular scenery, from the Sierra’s craggy peaks into the crystalline purity of Lake Tahoe.
The attractions in Lake Tahoe range from casinos, skiing and hotels to historic sites and points of interest. Regardless of the final destination, Lake Tahoe is the ultimate full package getaway. On any side of the lake and during any time of year.
