Staycation fun for busy families who can’t get out of town.
Are you suffering vacation envy? Does scrolling through your social media feeds, seeing everyone else’s fun vacay pics make you just a teensy bit jealous? No, just me? Hey, I admit it; we have been super busy with jobs lately and life that the summer has pretty much passed us by. Although this year we missed out on a real family vacation, I decided that I wouldn’t let that stop me from having some fun with the kids before school starts. Take today, for example, after I finish with my work we are going to explore downtown Dallas.
We live about 25 minutes outside of downtown, so we are going to hit up a museum, a really cool park in the same area and follow it up with a food truck lunch. Nothing too wild, but a change of pace and it will get us out of the house for some fun. So if you are looking for some staycation inspiration, try one of the following.
Beach Day Fun
If you are lucky enough to live near a beach or lake, plan a day trip. Pack a picnic, lots of sunscreen, beach towels and prepare for a ton of fun. Even if you don’t live near a lake or beach, visit a local pool.
Biking or Hiking Through a Local Park or Trail
If you live in an area that doesn’t feel like you live on the actual face of the sun, look up a local park and see if they have trails for hiking or biking. This is a great way to get the family out and moving, plus enjoy some nature. Be sure to bring lots of water and bug spray.
If it’s been a while since you’ve seen your favorite family or school friends, invite them over for a fun night. Pick some fun outdoor games, fire up the grill and catch up on what everyone has been doing all summer. You might find you aren’t the only one with vacation envy.
Family Fun Night In
Chances are if you’ve been too busy for a vacation, you’ve probably been too busy for some quality family time at home. Or even if you have been staring at each other all summer, a game night or movie night could be what you need. Vote on a new movie to watch, grab all your favorite movie snacks and cozy up on the couch. If your family isn’t the movie type, try a board game. If that doesn’t work, we always enjoy a fun dance party. My kids love when we play their favorite songs and dance along with them. It also provides for some great iPhone videos.
Explore a Nearby City or Your Town
When is the last time you were a tourist in your city? I bet it’s probably been a while, if ever. Look up what makes your city stand out if you don’t already know and start at the top of the list. Check out the local library or museums, famous landmarks or restaurants. You may learn some things you never knew, and your kiddos will definitely learn a thing or two.
