My husband and I try to spend at least one night a week just us. But the rest of the time it’s us and our two kids paling around. Which is totally fine with me, I know it won’t be that way forever. While I like the time as a family, some of my favorite quality time with kids is watching them do the things they love.
Seeing My Kids Joy
Last week was my son’s eighth birthday, and we let him invite a few friends out on Friday night for bowling, arcade games, and laser tag. Since they were my son’s closest friends, I got a real kick out of watching him with them. Some of them have been friends since they were four, so they really have a good time when they are together. It’ s like seeing them as the funny little people they are and not just my kids. I am no saint, they made me nuts the whole time and they acted like wild little boys, but it was still fun.
With my daughter who is five or five and a half as she reminds me, I love morning drop-offs. Most mornings anyway. On the days that she finds a friend to walk in with, it just tugs at my heartstrings. She immediately lights up. Often the girls will hold hands and giggle as they walk up the sidewalk to the building. Which if you ask me, is how it should be. I wish I could just bottle that joy up and save it forever.
Just the Two of Us
When you have more than one kid, it can be hard to get in quality time with just them individually. Especially whenever everyone in our house has busy schedules. That is one of the reasons bedtime is one of my favorites. Every night I try to lay down with each kid before bed. It’s the perfect time for snuggles or pillow chats or big questions that I am not sure I am ready to answer yet. But I love it. It feels me up on days that I am completely drained. Now, it’s not always this way. Some nights I only have it in me for a tuck in and a sugar or nights when they fall asleep on the couch there isn’t much us time. But the other times make up for it and carry me through when the chaos of life has me looking for the ejection button.
Family Bonding Time
But if I have to pick a favorite family I activity, it would be when we go to either our family place in the country or at the beach. Neither are as glamorous as they sound but both are places we all love to go. While we get to go to the cabin more (it’s an hour and a half away vs. the five-hour beach drive), it’s still special. Finding new adventures in the places we enjoy, makes my heart smile. And hopefully, my kiddos will look back on the fun and not the screeching about packing or to quit fighting in the car. Wink.
