Now, let me preface this with one statement. I have been to very few places in the world. But I do know no matter where it is, my favorite place is always near an ocean.
The Waves Soothe Me
My favorite place to go is to our family’s beach spot in Galveston Texas. It’s the perfect little getaway that is only fivehours away(depending on traffic). My in-laws have owned the place for decades. And while Galveston isn’t the most gorgeous beach spot on the planet to some, for me, it is all I need to get me back to my center. My entire life, just sitting in the sun listening to waves roll in puts me at ease like nothing else can.
This year with all that we had going on, we only made it down once or twice, but those short visits did so much for me.
It Brings Back Great Memories
The other thing that makes the beach my favorite place is that always carries a warm and cozy feel of happy memories. My husband and I have been going to Galveston for our entire relationship. Lots of great times, but we’ve also had some terrible times. We had to put my husband’s dog, Nora, down while we were there one time. She had cancer. We woke up one morning to find that the tumor on her chest had ruptured. She was nine years old, and my husband had her when we met. It was awful, my son was two, and I was pregnant with our daughter.
But we got through it.
Being at the beach also brings back happy memories of trips I had before I met my husband. A trip the Jersey Shore with an old roommate. Driving to Jones beach when I was a nanny on Long Island. Visiting a good friend in Southern California after she moved. A family trip to Miami and the Keys after I graduated. My first trip to Mexico a fun stay at a wellness resort in Akumal with my husband and some of our best friends. All of them hold such special places in my heart and always bring a smile to my face.
Making New Memories
Today, though I love the fun, I have with my kids when we get to go to Galveston. And hopefully, someday, we will get to explore new beaches. Clearly, not every season of my life will allow for elaborate trips to the beach for one reason or another. But as long as I can get my Galveston time, I will be just fine.
I think for each of us it is vital to find that one place that calms us. I mean really calms us. You know that warm feeling that rushes over you. And you feel all that is right with the world. It can be whatever.
Trees, pastures, rolling hills, and no neighbors does that for my husband. He gets such a kick out of being out in nature, starting campfires and riding mowers or tractors. And I like seeing him so happy.
And if I know, it will be a while before I can get a beach trip in. I will drive downtown. Being around the hustle of the city electrifies me differently. It reminds me the world is so much bigger than my little spot in it. So get out there and rediscover your favorite place.
